What's Going On?

| | Comments (0)

So yeah, things are quiet around here. It's almost time to re-post the yule log, and yet the last posting is barely off the "most recent posts" list. But that doesn't mean I've abandoned the Internet...

Part of what's happened was a cross-country move (NYC to SF) and a new job. That was enough to throw anyone off his or her game... assuming the game was there in the first place.

But more relevantly, I've shifted my "posting" gears to a parallel Tumblr site. I'm probably going to put this Movable Type site into permanent archive mode soon (though leaving it accessible to the Googlebots) and redirect the primary URL to Tumblr. It's just more convenient to use, whether on laptop or my mobile phone of choice, and far more conducive to a sense of "community" than this stand-alone presence ever could be.

The easiest way to see what's going on in my life (real world and online) remains my Twitter feed, where most Tumblr posts (and a fair number of Last.fm auto-posts) also appear. I also finally have a couple Spotify playlists that may be expanded (unless I relocate all of them somewhere like Mixcloud).

In the meantime, let's celebrate one of those rare occasions when it's OK that multiple songs essentially share the same title.

Operators Will Be Standing By...

From 7:00pm (eastern daylight time) on October 1 to late on October 8 (or early on October 9), WPRB, 103.3 FM, Princeton, NJ will be holding its annual membership drive.  Funds pledges and donated during this drive help support the station's annual operating budget.

For the few people reading this site who don't already know me in real life, it shouldn't take long to figure out that WPRB is one of the most significant institutions in my life. I first darkened its (admittedly dingy) doorstep in September 1990 and quickly became part of the family -- spinning records, reorganizing the record library, fixing broken equipment, or just hanging out on the dilapidated couches in the lobby. 18 years later, I remain a member of the station's alumni managing board, helping to ensure that WPRB is there for future generations of students, community members, and loyal listeners.

The membership drive is a great event for the station's all-volunteer staff. It brings students, alumni, and community members together, helping (or forcing) them to meet more people than just the DJs who immediately precede and follow their own shows. It helps every participant understand their connection to the business of running a small business in a complex economic environment. And with all the special on-air events and free food, it's just a fun time to be around.

This year, through the Free Yr Radio campaign sponsored by Toyota and Urban Outfitters, WPRB will be giving away a new Toyota Yaris automobile.  You don't have to pledge to win, but nobody likes a freeloader, right?

All contributions are welcome -- small, large, anywhere in between. Premiums abound at all levels, from magnets to t-shirts to the Pledge Penguin FM radio.  There's even a handy installment option this year if you'd rather spread out the payments.  Check out pledge.wprb.com for all the details, and thanks in advance for your support of independent radio.

My Hypothetical Twitter of the Moment

SKM ... is thankful that his music library all fits in his VW Jetta.

I will have photos soon, but those who know me (and have helped move this collection in the past) can begin to form the mental pictures.  Here's a clue, though: I'm a former college radio DJ who once harbored the irrational (but far too common) desire to own a personal version of the station's library.  The pace of acquisition slowed considerably once I found other ways to occupy my time (see, e.g., the Malt & Barley Chronicles), but the weeding and winnowing has been a slow and arduous process.

And now that I'm moving for the first time in four years, from DC to NYC, with professional assistance that I don't trust, moving the records on my own has become an obsession of painful proportions.  On the plus side, I think I've got some reinforcements handy for ye olde Anti-Static podcast in the near future.

Hello World.

The move has been somewhat successful... a few broken links still in place, and a new template to modify and rebuild, but otherwise we should be back in business shortly. Thanks for your patience.

Administriviality time ... we've moved!  Yes, the far-flung, loosely-related elements of this publishing empire have new virtual homes.  Please update your links and bookmarks accordingly:

Similarly, the RSS/XML feeds have migrated over to Feedburner. If you're finding site this via your favorite newsreader, please update your subscription using the handy links in the "Administrivia" sidebar.  Thanks.

[Real content returning soon, but probably not 'til I get back from a whirlwind trip to Seattle (hooray).]
