Bloghits #2 / Coursing #7(a)
Fortune Cookie of the Week (and previously-unrealized personal credo):
The universe without music would be madness.

Random Radio Recollection:
"I'm Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, reminding you that it won't kill you if you don't drink and drive."
This astounding bit of reductive reasoning leapt back into my consciousness through the discovery of Bruce's weekly radio show on BBC 6 Music, my new favorite at-work listening experience. Other DJs include Steve Lamacq (cutting loose from his more scripted Radio1 efforts), Tom Robinson (of "2-4-6-8 Motorway" fame), and Marc Riley (yes, that Marc Riley formerly of the Fall and the Creepers). Hearing these folks has me really missing the on-air studio. I think it's the ability to be "professional" and exceptionally competent without being cheesy -- not that I was anywhere near this level, but it's certainly the ideal I aimed for as a DJ.
Musical Gadgetry Roundup:
- Gizmodo brings us details on the latest in German engineering for the "still not dead" analog and vinyl market...
- while BoingBoing points out the existence of a laser-guided turntable that theoretically would end the risk of scratching records while replaying them.
Quiz of the Week, suggested by some random MySpace types:
Joe Strummer... you've been through the cleansing fire of punk, only to pick up a few venereal diseases along the way. You're more of an optimist when it comes to genius. But you can write wicked-deadly riffs and lyrics.
and finally, Steve Lamacq's 6 Music "Good Day / Bad Day" segment (with my current answers):
- First single: Led Zeppelin, "Immigrant Song" / "Traveling Riverside Blues" (mainstream); Bricks, Girl with the Carrot Skin (independent)
- First full-length LP/CD/cassette: J. Geils Band, Freeze Frame (mainstream); The Clash, Combat Rock (independent)
- First gig: Clancy Brothers, Fallon Field (Roslindale, MA, 1980-ish) (mainstream); Superchunk, Terrace Club (Princeton, NJ, 1991)
- Best gigs: Stereolab, Terrace Club (1994); Rodan / Polvo, Black Cat (Washington, DC, 1994); Wedding Present, [some club in Chelsea] (NYC, 1992)
- Current listening: The Go! Team, Gorillaz, and Augustus Pablo are in my bag today...
- Good day song: The Clean, "Slug Song"; honorable mention to Guided by Voices, "If We Wait"
- Bad day song: Black Tambourine, "Drown"; honorable mention to Terminals, "Both Ends Burning" (Roxy Music cover)
(As you might imagine, the last three bullets seem to change on a daily basis...)
